Equine-Assisted Learning for Neurodiverse Individuals

Horses are attentive, responsive, and highly attuned to the people around them. They communicate through posture, movement, and subtle nonverbal cues, offering clear, consistent feedback that can be especially supportive for neurodiverse individuals.

Silver Saddle’s equine-assisted therapy sessions are designed for individuals who are autistic, have ADHD, or experience differences in attention, regulation, or sensory processing. Sessions are professionally facilitated and guided by individualized goals, with an emphasis on predictability, choice, and structured therapeutic progression.

The focus is on social-emotional development, self-awareness, emotional regulation, and adaptive skills within a calm, supportive environment.

What You’ll Learn

Each 60-minute session is guided by individualized therapeutic goals within a structured, predictable framework. Activities are primarily ground-based and use the horse’s natural responsiveness to support regulation, awareness, and connection.

Areas of focus may include:

  • Co-regulation through sensory and kinesthetic experiences

  • Clear, intentional communication through body language and nonverbal cues

  • Interoceptive awareness — noticing and responding to internal signals

  • Navigating transitions and building flexibility within a supportive structure

  • Strengthening social-emotional skills such as boundaries, trust, and cooperative engagement

Sessions are offered individually or in small groups of up to three participants to allow for personalized pacing and meaningful support.

What to Expect

Your facilitator will take time to understand your goals to thoughtfully pair you with an appropriate horse. Sessions follow a consistent, structured format that supports predictability and emotional safety while allowing space for choice and meaningful engagement.

Over time, participants strengthen regulation skills, develop clearer communication (both nonverbal and relational), and gain increased confidence navigating social situations and transitions that extend into daily life.

What to Wear

  • Closed-toed shoes

  • Comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement

Programming is ground-based, so plan for time outdoors and close interaction with horses. Choose clothes you’re comfortable moving in and that don’t mind a little dust or the occasional horse “kiss.”
